Walkthrough: Reading Your Janma Kundali in Pandit Ji

Your Janma Kundali (birth chart) is the foundation of your Vedic astrology reading. Pandit Ji displays it in both North and South Indian formats, with planet positions, sign labels, and a full planet table. This walkthrough explains what you're looking at.

Opening Your Kundali

Open the Guidance tab and tap the Kundali card, or go to the Parivar screen and tap "View Chart" on any person card. Make sure the right profile is selected — your Kundali is specific to your birth data. A person switcher at the top of the screen lets you move between all your Parivar members.

Choosing Your Chart Style

At the top of the Kundali screen, tap "North Indian" or "South Indian" to switch between the two display formats.

• South Indian: A fixed grid where the zodiac signs are always in the same positions. Aries is always in the second box of the top row, and signs flow clockwise. The "Lagna" label appears in whichever box contains your rising sign.
• North Indian: A diamond layout where the houses are fixed (1st house always at the top) but the signs rotate based on your Ascendant. Sign numbers are written in each house.

Both show identical planetary positions — the format is purely a display preference. If you're from South India or were trained in that tradition, the South Indian style will feel more natural.

Finding Your Key Chart Points

Look for these markers in your chart:

• Lagna (Asc) — Your rising sign, marked with "Lagna" or "L" in the chart. This is the 1st house and the starting point for all house readings.
• Mo — Moon. The sign it's in is your Rashi (Moon sign). The nakshatra within that sign is your Janma Nakshatra.
• Su — Sun. The sign it's in is your Vedic Sun sign (which may differ from your Western Sun sign by one sign due to the ayanamsa difference).
• Ra / Ke — Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes. They are always exactly opposite each other.

Reading the Planet Table

Below the chart, a planet table lists every graha with its sign, house number, and nakshatra. This is the quickest way to see all placements at a glance without counting through the chart visually. Look for planets marked (R) — these are retrograde (Vakri), which strengthens their introspective and internalised qualities.

Sade Sati and Mangal Dosha

Two important flags appear on the Kundali screen when relevant. A Sade Sati card appears when Saturn is transiting through the 12th, 1st, or 2nd sign from your Moon — showing the phase (Rising, Peak, or Setting). A Mangal Dosha chip appears inline in your birth details if Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of your chart.

Divisional Charts

Use the chart type toggle to switch between Lagna (main birth chart) and Navamsha D9 (the 9th divisional chart, used for marriage and spiritual purpose). Both are displayed in whichever North/South Indian style you've selected.

Your Mahadasha Timeline — Pro

Below the planet table, Pro users see the Vimsottari Mahadasha timeline. Tap your current Mahadasha bar to expand it into Antardashas; tap an Antardasha to drill into Pratyantar Dashas — three levels of planetary sub-periods. The currently active period is highlighted in saffron at every level.
