Tarabalam and Chandrabalam: Personal Auspiciousness From Your Birth Star
Tarabalam and Chandrabalam are two traditional indicators that compare today's sky to your birth chart, giving you a personalized reading your neighbor's panchang app can't produce.
The panchang tells you what the sky is doing. But what it's doing for you specifically requires your birth data. Tarabalam and Chandrabalam are two traditional indicators that bridge this gap — taking the day's nakshatra and Moon sign and measuring them against your personal chart to produce a daily personal auspiciousness reading.
Tarabalam — Your Nakshatra Strength Today
Tarabalam (तारबलम) measures the relationship between today's transiting nakshatra and your Janma Nakshatra. The 27 nakshatras are counted from your birth nakshatra, and the resulting position (1st, 2nd, 3rd... 9th, 10th...) falls into one of nine Tara categories, each repeating three times across the full 27-nakshatra cycle:
- Janma (1st, 10th, 19th): Mixed; your own nakshatra can be intense
- Sampat (2nd, 11th, 20th): Auspicious; wealth and abundance
- Vipat (3rd, 12th, 21st): Inauspicious; obstacles and accidents
- Kshema (4th, 13th, 22nd): Auspicious; welfare and happiness
- Pratyak (5th, 14th, 23rd): Inauspicious; obstruction
- Sadhana (6th, 15th, 24th): Auspicious; achievement of goals
- Naidhana (7th, 16th, 25th): Inauspicious; danger and loss
- Mitra (8th, 17th, 26th): Auspicious; friendship and support
- Param Mitra (9th, 18th, 27th): Most auspicious; great friend
Days with Sampat, Kshema, Sadhana, Mitra, and Param Mitra tara for your nakshatra are favorable. Vipat, Pratyak, and Naidhana are inauspicious. Janma tara is complex — your own nakshatra day can go either way.
Chandrabalam — Your Moon Sign Strength Today
Chandrabalam (चन्द्रबलम) measures the relationship between today's transiting Moon sign and your Janma Rashi (birth Moon sign). The Moon's current sign is counted from your Janma Rashi, and the resulting house position determines your Chandrabalam:
Favorable positions: 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th from Janma Rashi. Unfavorable positions: 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 12th from Janma Rashi.
The most significant inauspicious position is the 8th from Janma Rashi — when the Moon is in the 8th sign from your birth Moon sign, this is a broader version of the Chandrashtama concept.
Vara Shuddhi
A third personal indicator, Vara Shuddhi, checks whether the weekday is friendly to your Moon sign based on the day's ruling planet. Certain day-Moon sign combinations are considered supportive; others are discordant. When Vara Shuddhi is favorable alongside good Tarabalam and Chandrabalam, the day is considered personally excellent for important work.
Using All Three Together
A day with favorable Tarabalam, favorable Chandrabalam, and Vara Shuddhi is called a "triply fortified" day in some Jyotisha texts — particularly powerful for any important personal undertaking. Conversely, a day when all three are unfavorable (especially with Vipat or Naidhana tara, 8th Chandrabalam, and unfavorable Vara) is a day for extra care.
These three indicators are what make a personalized panchang app fundamentally different from a generic one. Without your birth data, none of these calculations are possible.
Pandit Ji gives you a live panchang, personal guidance from your birth chart, and muhurat timing — calculated for your exact location.
