What is Chandrashtama? The 2.5-Day Caution Window in Your Chart

Chandrashtama occurs when the Moon transits the 8th nakshatra from your Janma Nakshatra. Learn what to avoid, how long it lasts, and why it's taken seriously in Jyotisha.

If you've ever had a few days where everything felt slightly off — decisions that backfired, conversations that went sideways, energy that just wasn't there — you may have been in Chandrashtama. This is one of the most practically useful concepts in Jyotisha (Vedic astrology), and one that traditional practitioners check nearly every day.

The Definition

Chandrashtama (चन्द्राष्टम) means "Moon in the 8th." It occurs when the transiting Moon is in the nakshatra that is 8th from your Janma Nakshatra (the nakshatra of your birth Moon). The 8th house in any chart is associated with sudden changes, hidden obstacles, health challenges, and transformation — and when the Moon transits this sensitive point, it activates that energy for approximately 2.5 days.

How to Calculate Your Chandrashtama

Count 8 nakshatras forward from your Janma Nakshatra. If your birth nakshatra is Rohini (4th), your Chandrashtama nakshatra is Anuradha (17th). When the Moon transits Anuradha, you're in Chandrashtama. This happens approximately once a month, lasting about 2.5 days (the Moon spends roughly this time in each nakshatra).

The 27 nakshatras repeat in a cycle, so counting 8 forward wraps around if needed. For example, if your Janma Nakshatra is Uttara Bhadrapada (26th), the 8th nakshatra is Rohini (4th, counting 26→27→1→2→3→4).

What to Avoid During Chandrashtama

Traditional guidance advises extra caution during Chandrashtama for:

This is not paralysis — routine work continues normally. The guidance is specifically about major new commitments made during this window.

Chandrashtama and Ask the Pandit

One of the most practical uses of Chandrashtama awareness is in muhurat selection. When someone asks "is today a good day to sign this contract?", a good Jyotishi will check not just the universal panchang but whether the querent is in Chandrashtama. The same calendar day can be favorable by universal indicators but personally inauspicious for one individual.

The Post-Chandrashtama Lift

Many people notice that the day after Chandrashtama ends has a noticeable uplift — clarity returns, decisions feel cleaner, energy normalizes. This is partly confirmation bias, but it's also a real consequence of the Moon moving into the 9th nakshatra from your Janma — the Mitra tara, associated with friendship and support.

How Often Does It Occur?

The Moon completes its circuit of all 27 nakshatras in approximately 27.3 days. This means you experience Chandrashtama roughly once a month, for about 2.5 days. Over a year, that's approximately 30 days — so being aware of these windows gives you meaningful advance information for planning.
