Moving into a new home is one of life's most significant transitions. In Hindu tradition, the Griha Pravesh (गृह प्रवेश) ceremony — the ritual first entry — is conducted at a carefully chosen muhurat to invite prosperity, health, and harmony into the household. Get the timing right, and the home begins its life filled with positive energy. This is not just ceremony; it reflects a deep understanding that beginnings set the tone for everything that follows.

What Makes a Good Griha Pravesh Muhurat?

Auspicious Tithis

Not all tithis are suitable for Griha Pravesh. The generally favored tithis are: 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, and 13 of Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight). Avoid Chaturthi (4th), Navami (9th), Chaturdashi (14th), Amavasya (new moon), and Purnima (full moon) for housewarmings. Purnima is sometimes permitted for certain traditions.

Auspicious Nakshatras

The most favorable nakshatras for Griha Pravesh are: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Anuradha, Hasta, Pushya, and Revati. These nakshatras are associated with stability, growth, and blessings. Avoid Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Mula — these are gandanta nakshatras at the junctions of water and fire signs.

Auspicious Varas (Weekdays)

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are traditionally favored for Griha Pravesh. Sunday and Saturday are generally avoided. Tuesday is acceptable in some regional traditions but inauspicious in others.

Avoiding Inauspicious Yogas

Vishkambha, Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, Parigha, and other inauspicious yogas should be avoided. On the other hand, dates with Sarvaartha Siddhi Yoga or Amrit Siddhi Yoga get a significant boost.

Planetary Positions

Jupiter and Venus should not be combust (too close to the Sun) or in retrograde when possible. Both planets are considered dev guru and shukra — great benefics whose strength blesses new beginnings. When both are combust simultaneously, many pandits advise postponing auspicious ceremonies for a few weeks.

Personalizing With Your Birth Chart

A truly customized muhurat goes beyond the universal panchang. Your Janma Nakshatra should be in a favorable tara (birth star position) relative to the day's nakshatra — specifically Sampat, Kshema, Sadhana, or Mitra tara. Traditional guidelines also specify the time of day: the ceremony should be completed before the Sun reaches the midheaven (noon). Brahma Muhurta or the morning Choghadiya windows are ideal. Seasons to Favor or Avoid
